    How to report stolen content to YouTube

    Whether you're the creator whose content was stolen, or a supporter who wants to help — here's exactly what you can do and how to do it.

    Important: Only the original creator can file a formal copyright (DMCA) takedown. Supporters play a valuable but different role — this guide covers both clearly.

    As the original creator, you hold the copyright to your content — giving you the most powerful legal tool to get stolen videos removed. A formal DMCA notice forces YouTube to act, and repeated strikes result in the offending channel being terminated.

    Gather your evidence first

    Before filing, collect: the URL of the stolen video, the URL of your original video, and the approximate date you first published it. Screenshots help but aren't required.

    Go to YouTube's copyright removal tool

    Visit youtube.com/copyright_complaint_form. Sign in with your Google account. Select "I want to submit a copyright infringement notification".

    You'll need to: describe your original content, paste the stolen video URLs — you can submit multiple at once — and provide your name and contact email. YouTube accepts up to 1,000 URLs per submission.

    Submit and wait for YouTube to act

    YouTube typically reviews and removes confirmed infringing content within a few days. You'll get an email confirmation. The channel that stole your content also receives a copyright strike.

    Alternative: report directly from the video

    Use the "..." menu on any stolen video

    On any YouTube video, click the three-dot menu → "Report" → "Infringes my rights" → "Copyright". This is quicker but less powerful — it flags the video for manual review rather than filing a formal DMCA notice. Best used alongside a formal submission, not instead of it.

    What happens after you submit

    Within hours: YouTube sends you an email confirming receipt of your request.
    Within days: Confirmed infringing videos are removed and the channel receives a copyright strike.
    After 3 strikes: The channel is permanently terminated. YouTube enforces this automatically.
